Why you should definitely visit Santorini in 2018

You may be a little caught up in the hectic nature that is the run-up to Christmas but you can afford those moments to daydream about your next holiday destination.

As the UK braces itself for the onset of some pretty chilly weather, warm yourself up with thoughts of a summer holiday. The New Year may be another month away but we’ve been thinking a lot about the Greek islands and one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit – Santorini.

Make 2018 the year when you discover the sheer majesty of this corner of Greece. Witness the most incredible sunsets over shimmering azure waters, sample delicious food and relax on pristine beaches.

If you need any more convincing here are 5 reasons why you should be choosing Santorini for your next holiday.

Just look at the views!

The vivid blue of the ocean, the striking brightness of the whitewashed buildings contrasting with the rugged auburn of the rocks – you could just sit and drink in this beauty for hours on end. The stunning views are what make Santorini such a unique place to visit.

Head to the quaint town of Imerovigli during the afternoon and as evening approaches watch quite possibly the best sunset you will ever see. While many tourists head to the much busier Oia, Imerovigli is where you can watch this dramatic event in blissful serenity – could you ask for a better holiday moment?

It is a place for romance

If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking for somewhere to honeymoon next summer then they would be hard pushed to find somewhere more romantic than Santorini. Where else could you experience a sunset this dramatic?

Take a trip out to the famous Red Sand beach to get you in the mood before heading to Imerovigli. Here you can enjoy a candlelit meal at one of the tavernas, all the while the basking in the orange glow of the sunset – what could be more romantic than that?

The beaches are pretty special

Despite Santorini’s somewhat diminutive size, it has a number of great beaches. Our favourite (and many other people’s too) is undoubtedly Kamari Santorini. Located southeast of the capital Fira, this black sand cove offers a place to unwind all day.

Pull up a sunbed and enjoy the views of the enormous rock known as Mesa Vouno or try your hand at the numerous water sports available. As day turns to night, dust yourself off and enjoy a bite to eat at the restaurants and cafes that line the promenade.

It’s a shopaholic’s paradise

If you like a spot of retail therapy then you’ve come to the right place. Santorini is renowned for its shopping with a string of high end boutiques selling a range of handcrafted jewellery and much, much more.

While it may cause a little strain on your bank balance, it’s okay because you’re on your holidays! Stroll around the delightful shops, purchase an irresistible gelato and pick up a souvenir, you won’t be disappointed.

The food is incredible, obviously

I think it goes without saying that Greek food is pretty special and in Santorini you can taste the very best of it. You can spend your entire stay eating your bodyweight in feta cheese and dipping bread in oil but there is a lot more to discover.

Santorini has a range of restaurants that will suit all budgets. Embrace the Greek culture and try unforgettable seafood that has been caught fresh that morning, tuck into a mezze platter and wash it down with a delectable glass of wine. While many people will head to Amoundi Bay, explore a little and you will find a restaurant you will make you fall in love with Santorini.
