Thanks to miles of white sand beaches, year-round sunshine, historical monuments and delicious local cuisine Turkey has long been a favourite among British holidaymakers. However, now there is yet another reason to make your next break a Turkish delight.
The country has been enduring economic uncertainty with the lira falling almost 30% against the pound during August. While the central bank announced this week (September 3rd) that it would be taking action to halt the slide, it has sparked a surge in holiday bookings.
As the news surrounding Brexit has seen the pound struggle against the euro making holidays to popular destinations such as Spain and Portugal become a little more expensive. In Turkey, however, visitors are now seeing their money go much further.
Figures from currency conversion site XE.com show that British holidaymakers changing £100 can get up to 850 Turkish lira, compared to 430 lira during the same period last year. When the average cost of a meal is £8 and domestic beer is priced at around £1.60, according cost of living aggregator Numbeo, Turkey is an increasingly desirable destination for couples and families alike.
Beautiful resorts at excellent value
In July, the Post Office named Turkey as the best value holiday destination for 2018. Calculating the average cost of typical holiday expenditures such as a family meal, drinks, suncream, insect repellent and beach items, the Post Office put Turkey at £79.81 – a 36% a fall from 2017’s total.
Commenting on the findings, Andrew Brown, from Post Office Travel Money, said: “If you haven’t already booked and are looking for a late deal, the low resort prices in Turkey and Bulgaria make these countries great bets for wallet-watchers. In the eurozone Spain is still great value and the low prices we found in Corfu make Greece a good tip too.”
