Which holiday destination offers the best value for money?

As thrifty holiday-loving Brits we are always on the lookout for the best value for money when it comes to our summer (and any other time of the year) escapes.

We scour the internet checking price comparison sites to see where we can get the very best deal – although the much smarter holidaymakers just head straight to Sunmaster – it can be somewhat difficult if you’re not in the know. Holidays can be a little pricey and the UK’s decision to leave the European Union has only compounded the issue.

As summer approaches and we all get the holiday itch once again, there is one question on everybody’s lips – which destination offers the best value for money?

And the winner is *drum roll* Turkey!

Two studies named the country as offering the best value for UK holidaymakers. This covered both the price of the package and the in-resort costs. Turkey edged out favourites such as Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and the Balearic Islands as we look to get a little more bang for our buck.

A study by OTA On The Beach noted that the Turkish resort of Antalya offered excellent value for those looking to stay somewhere with a high number of Blue Flag beaches. The research found that holidaymakers could enjoy these delights for just £122 for a week of a self-catering. This edged out the likes of the Algarve and the Costa del Sol which both had higher in-resort costs.

One of the main selling points was Antalya boasting a close proximity to 194 Blue Flag beaches but it wasn’t just here where Turkey is excelling.

Research by Post Office Travel Money revealed that British holidaymakers were turning to Turkey thanks to the pound’s strength against the Turkish lira. Sterling has made a 27.7 per cent year-on-year gain on the currency which is making it much more affordable compared to other European destinations.

Andrew Brown from Post Office Travel Money explained: “Another exception is Turkey where tour operators are reporting huge increases in demand. This is hardly surprising given the collapse of the Turkish lira, which has halved in value over the past five years and is currently worth almost 28 per cent less than last April.

“When you consider that tourists changing £500 into lira will get the equivalent of £108 more in cash, it is hardly surprising that we have seen lira sales grow by 30 per cent year-on-year in March.”
