Top destinations for a March holiday

Why wait until summer to grab a spot of sunshine? Spring has almost sprung and as we wave goodbye to a wet and windy winter, why not treat yourself with a March holiday?

The spring is an excellent time to get away. Air fares are much lower than the summer rush, it is not unbearably hot in some destinations and resorts can be a lot quieter, what is there not to love? Whether you’re looking for a short break in Europe or a long haul adventure to a far flung destination, March provides a perfect time to jet off.

Here are recommendations for a spot of spring sunshine.

Athens, Greece

The Greek capital is simply alive with history. Everywhere you turn you will see a piece of a bygone era that helped to shape modern civilisation of today. From the Acropolis looming above the sprawling city to the Ancient Agora to the Panathinaiko Stadium which held the very first modern day Olympic Games in 1896, Athens is teeming with historical sites.

Yes, the city may have endured some particularly difficult financial problems in recent years but that does not detract from the beauty of it. Just spend an afternoon strolling through the streets of Athens and you will see for yourself. Best of all, temperatures usually hover around 16 degrees C mark making it hugely pleasant both day and night.

For the culture vultures, you can visit the National Archaeological Museum and the Temple of Olympian Zeus while for you night birds you can head to the Psyrri or Gazi and party into the early hours. With regular flights throughout March, there has never been a better time to visit Athens.

Las Vegas, USA

Ride Venetian gondolas, see the Eiffel Tower, watch Barry Manilow, gamble into the early hours, be dazzled by fountain shows, you can have it all in Sin City. Viva Las Vegas!

Spring time is ideal for visiting this unique part of the US and it will guarantee a holiday you’ll never forget. Stay in the luxurious hotels of the Bellagio, Caesars Palace or the relatively new Cosmopolitan and spend your days wandering this captivating, albeit slightly surreal, city set in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

Take a selfie next to the iconic ‘Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign or take a stroll down Fremont Street to discover old Vegas, why you could even get married – you are in Vegas after all! Spend your nights on the casino floors, the dramatic theatres and the abundance of bars and eateries while during the day take an once-in-a-lifetime trip to the nearby Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam.

In Vegas, anything is possible and you will never forget your spring holiday on the Strip.

Venice, Italy

While you can ride gondolas in Las Vegas, why not try out the real thing with a trip to Venice? Nothing says romance like floating through the waterways of this iconic Italian city.

You can spend hours walking around simply soaking up the beauty of Venice. Venture into the heart of the city to see the bell tower of Saint Mark, visit Doge’s Palace and, of course, Saint Mark’s Basilica. However, if that’s not your thing you can enjoy a pleasant stroll along the Giudecca canal and watch the gondolas sail by.

When it comes to the evening, you are spoilt for choice with restaurants and bars as far as the eye can see. All of which will be dishing up quintessentially Venetian cuisine of cuttlefish and risotto. And with temperatures much cooler than in summer, this famous city of love could be the perfect destination for a stolen weekend.

Phuket, Thailand

For the ultimate spring time adventure then why not consider Phuket? Thailand, and Southeast Asia as a whole, is becoming extremely popular with British tourists whether it is gap year backpackers or couples seeking a completely different holiday.

A short flight from Bangkok is the island of Phuket and it is a little slice of paradise you can drift away in.

With picturesque views and tranquil waters, this is the perfect place for exploring. Hop in a boat and tour the beautiful islands surrounding Phuket or grab your snorkel and dive into the depths of the ocean. You can visit the unique Sanambin Beach, or Airport Beach, in Mai Khao and watch planes fly in over head.

Watch the sunset over the horizon then soak up Phuket’s bustling nightlife. Try delicious authentic noodle dishes of Khanom Jin and Nam Phrik Kung Siap while washed down with some local beer. Like Vegas, a trip to Phuket will be one you will never forget.
