The festivities are over for another year. The Christmas tree is coming down and the decorations are being packed back into the attic to be untangled at a later date.
It is now when we start thinking about what we want to achieve for the year ahead. Whether it is buying a gym membership, binning cigarettes or attempting to eat healthier foods, many of us will stress that “2019 will be different” with our New Year’s resolutions. One way to ensure this is to create your own holiday resolution list.
This is the year to explore all the places you wanted to see and we’ve got a couple of suggestions of what should be on your list of 2019 goals.
Find your new favourite destination
As all the ‘New Year, New Me’ hashtags currently spamming your social media feeds will attest, 2019 is the year to do things a little differently. There is no better way to do this than finding your new favourite destination.
You may have always dreamed touring the Greek islands or sailing up the Norwegian fjords or even winning big at the blackjack table in Las Vegas. This is the year to do it. You never know, where you choose could be your new favourite for years to come.
Take yourself out of your comfort zone
This year is going to be the year you come back from your holiday with an incredible story to tell. It’s time to say “yes” to a few more things. Take a day off from lounging about the pool and truly embrace your surroundings.
Book onto excursions promoted at your hotel, agree to hiking through the mountains for an incredible view of the resort or hire quad bikes and glide along desert dunes. Holidays are all about making memories, so step out of your comfort zone and treasure unique experiences.
Try new local cuisine
There is a certain buzz that comes with finding a restaurant that hits the spot in terms of holiday food. You gain a sense of pride that you ventured off the beaten track and discovered somewhere known only to the locals.
Take a left off the promenade of international restaurants and sample the delights of local delicacies in the quaint tavernas, cafes and late-night bars. These are the places you won’t be able to stop talking about when you return home.
Learn a new skill
From surfing on the rugged Portuguese coast to saluting the friendly marine life scuba diving in southern Cyprus, a holiday can be the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill. If there’s something you’ve thought “I wouldn’t mind doing that”, then here is your chance.
It can make your holiday that extra special and will provide memories that will last a lifetime. Every time you practice your golf swing, dance the salsa at a wedding or catch a sweet wave, it will remind you of that incredible holiday.
Celebrate a landmark on holiday
Give yourself the ultimate treat by celebrating a birthday, anniversary or whatever you feel on holiday. Take a break from the norm and really spoil you and your loved ones by toasting the occasion on a sunkissed Mediterranean beach or in the heart of a cosmopolitan city.
You could even see how the rest of the world celebrates the festive period. Huddle around a mug of gluhwein in snow-covered markets in the likes of Germany and Austria or watch the fireworks over Barcelona as it welcomes in the New Year.
Return to an old favourite
Of course, you could simply return to one of your favourite destinations. Fall back in love with that quaint beach, the restaurant where you first tried paella and that hotel where you had that romantic holiday back in the early 2000s. If you love that hit of nostalgia, then 2019 could be the time to revisit those past memories.
