There is a certain mystique about the Greek islands. Surrounded by the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea, these islands are awash with myths and legends that only heighten the fascination around them.
Blessed with landscapes fit for gods and goddesses, the islands are a haven of dramatic sunsets, tranquil oceans, serene countryside and, of course, breathtaking beaches. This is a region home to some the best stretches of shoreline you are likely to find in Europe and where you can create your very own piece of paradise.
If you are self-confessed beach lover then these are places in the Greek islands you need to be visiting.
Navagio Beach – Zante
Whether you know it as Smugglers Cove, Shipwreck Beach or Navagio Beach, there is one undeniable fact that this little beach on the coast of Zante is one Greece’s most recognisable. Emanating a vibe more in line with a James Bond film, Navagio Beach is the jewel of the Greek islands with the perfect contrast of milky white sand and azure waters of the Mediterranean.
Accessible by boat only, it is one of the most popular beaches in Greece characterised by the rusting wreck of the MV Panagiotis. The former smuggling ship ran aground during a storm in 1980 and has been a feature of this unique beach ever since.
Elafonissi Beach – Crete
If you could imagine the perfect beach, there is a high probability that it will look like Elafonissi. Perched on the southwestern tip of Crete is a picturesque beach which is widely regarded as being among the world’s best.
Much like the mythical icons of ancient Greece, the sand at Elafonissi is the stuff of legend with the pink hue known across the islands. These shades are delicately balanced against the turquoise lagoons and the lush forestry which sits back from the shore. It is an excellent place for families with the warm waters an inviting place for a paddle.
Myrtos Beach – Kefalonia
Another of the Greek islands’ titans of the beach scene is Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia. Soak up the sun on and admire the unrivalled view. Lying at the bottom of the Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros mountains it is often described as “one of the most dramatic beaches in Greece”.
Step on to the pebble shore and take in amazing panoramic of this area and then take a splash into the vivid blue of the Mediterranean. Stick until the evening and see the mesmerising spectacle of a Kefalonia sunset.
Perissa Beach – Santorini
Santorini might have something to say when it comes to sunsets. The island is famed for its sunsets as the whitewashed houses are bathed in a blood orange shade as dusk arrives. Naturally, Santorini is home to some pretty special beaches and Perissa Beach is one of the best.
Lying at the base of Mesa Vouno Mountain, Perissa’s black sand provides a reminder of Santorini’s volcanic past. This is a lively beach with a wide array of water sports available from jet skiing to parasailing while the promenade of bars, cafes and restaurants ensures you can spend the entire day here.
Porto Katsiki Beach – Lefkada
The huge white cliffs of Lefkada signal that you are close to the island’s undoubted best beach – Porto Katsiki. This secluded cove is only accessible down 80 steps but your reward at the bottom makes the journey worth it.
Enjoy the stillness of the area and watch the water glisten off the soft limestone rocks underneath the surface. Put on your snorkel and start to discover the fascinating marine life or just put a towel down and enjoy a day of total relaxation.
Agios Georgios – Corfu

The final stop on our tour of Greece’s best beaches is one with a silver screen past. The unassuming dunes of Agios Georgios in Corfu were the backdrop for James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only and you can create your own 007 adventure on this five kilometre stretch of golden sands.
Surrounded by rolling hills and pine trees, this is a place to break from the bustling atmosphere of Corfu. This is the place to unwind under another day of blue skies.
