The destinations you need to visit this Easter

When you wake up to howling winds and driving rain, battling through the daily commute is probably the last thing you want to be doing.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could swap all this for a little time in the sun? The wait is almost over as Easter is just around corner. It’s that glorious part of the year of extended weekends, school holidays and, sometimes, great weather. So naturally, this is the best time to jet off for some rest and relaxation on a cheeky holiday.

Where do you fancy this year? A long weekend of sightseeing? Perhaps a week soaking up the sun on the beach? Maybe even an All Inclusive retreat with the family? We’ve picked out some of our favourite destinations that are perfect for an Easter holiday.

A fascinating and historically important part of the Greek islands, Rhodes offers elements for every type of holiday. You can enjoy the beach life here with island’s east coast blessed with dramatic shores from secluded coves of Pefkos to the lively sands of Faliraki – each of which are perfect for paddling in the blue of the ocean (find out more about the best Greek island beaches here).

For the history buffs and city break enthusiasts among you then Rhodes Town is waiting to tell you its tale. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town and see a capital shaped by Ottoman and Roman empires with stunning architecture, while the New Town is awash with waterfront bars and tavernas. Don’t forget to visit the incredible Acropolis of Lindos, perfectly preserved since the 6th century.

We’ve had a thing for the Canary Islands for as long as we can remember and Lanzarote never fails to disappoint. From its wealth of incredible beaches to the awe-inspiring volcanic landscape, it is a destination that still has the potential to surprise you no matter how many times you visit.

Take a drive to Timanfaya National Park and see Lanzarote’s natural beauty in all its glory. Here you can climb up to the towering volcano and even tuck into a meal prepared from the volcanic heat. There are plenty of purpose-built resorts perfect for families while for the grown-ups, the island’s wine region is an absolute must stop-off point.

A blend of beautiful scenery and historical landmarks, Antalya provides the perfect introduction to Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. This ancient city boasts over 2,000 years of history and is home to Greco-Roman ruins while the cobbled streets of Kaleiçi are home to market stalls selling a range of traditional goods.

Then there is the modern side of Antalya with the city coming to life in the evening with bars, restaurants and clubs entering the masses. When you need a moment to chill out then there is no better place than Kleopatra Beach, which also acts as the perfect spot for admiring the sunset as night falls.

The Algarve is tailor-made for an Easter break. The springtime weather in southern Portugal ensures days of cloudless skies and pleasant evenings and Albufeira has everything you could wish for in a holiday destination.

The most popular town in the Algarve it is a haven for beach lovers with miles of pristine white sand and inviting ocean waters. Families will feel right at home thanks to the abundance of hotels, restaurants and attractions, including the amazing combination of theme park and sea life centre at Zoomarine.

Meanwhile, couples can enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Albufeira’s main strip or venture to the elegant setting of nearby Vilamoura. And if you like your golf, you can take advantage of the area’s many world class courses.

We would look pretty daft if we didn’t include the Balearic Islands in our Easter list. Menorca is perhaps the most underrated of all the islands in this part of the Mediterranean thanks to its much more laid back atmosphere to the noisy neighbours of Majorca and Ibiza.

This is where you can spend the day relaxing on beaches, exploring the natural beauty of Parc Natural S’Albufera des Grau and tasting authentic Spanish dishes. The capital of Mahon offers an excellent alternative city break destination while the resorts of Cala Blanca and Cala’n Bosch provide those beachside attractions that are perfect for families.

And the weather is pretty much perfect at this time of year.
