There are not many places in the world that can match the beauty of a sunset in Santorini. Pick out a spot at the clifftop tavernas in Oia and watch the sun turn the blue of the Aegean Sea to a deep blood orange as another day is wrapped up on the picturesque Greek island.
It is amazing to think that this scene of secluded coves, quaint villages and rolling countryside grew out of a huge volcanic eruption in 1450 BC. However, Santorini is the encapsulation of traditional Greece with whitewashed homes, miles of luscious vineyards and soft sand of the beaches.
And nowhere could be more romantic than Red Beach – a unique stretch of coastline near the village of Akrotiri.

Another place familiar with volcanoes is the rugged landscape of the Canary Islands. In this region you can hike through the countryside of Gran Canaria, enjoy a volcano barbecue in Lanzarote and explore the fascinating towns and beaches of Tenerife.
The largest of the Canary Islands has been a favourite among British holidaymakers for generations – even Queen Victoria would come here in the 19th century. It is easy to see why when an island can boast the scenery of Mount Teide National Park – an oasis of greenery punctuated by the looming dormant volcano El Teide.
Families will love the beaches of Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje and, of course, the amazing Siam Park theme park while couples will enjoy the relaxed vibes of La Orotava.

Try something a little different in 2019 with a holiday in Agadir. The Moroccan coastal city is another example of prospering in the face adversity as it was completely rebuilt after being hit by a huge earthquake in the 1960s.
In the years since, Agadir has blossomed into one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. The city is blessed with some amazing beaches with over nine miles of white sand perfectly contrasted with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. There is a certain charm to Agadir and you can sample traditional Morocco by haggling for gifts at the bazaars or visiting the ancient walled city of Taroundant.
If that wasn’t enough then prepare your tastebuds for a gastronomic adventure as Agadir offers some of the most delicious North African cuisine you will ever taste.
