Your wedding day is meant to be the happiest moment of your life but new research has suggested that booking a holiday brings even more joy.

Yes, planning a holiday was seen to give a bigger happiness boost than tying the knot, landing a new job, going on a date with a partner and getting engaged, according to respondents of a survey. It may not come as much of a surprise as you can already imagine the buzz of booking a holiday and then the anticipation of spending a week or two exploring a new location or just going back to one of your favourite retreats.

The research, carried out by Booking.com, questioned 17,000 people from 17 countries and the conclusion was that travel was the secret to true happiness. When looking for that boost in happiness, 77% of respondents said they book a holiday. That dwarfed other major life events such as their own wedding day (49%), getting engaged (45%), securing a new job (50%) and even having a baby (29%).

Booking.com also found that many people value a holiday much higher than material goods and prioritise planning a break more than purchasing possessions. Each aspect of the holiday brings a little more joy.

Every holiday starts with deciding where to go, discussing what to do there, making that first booking, buying some new clothes to show off while away, purchasing insurance, making sure you have everything ready and then having that first drink in the airport bar. Every part builds the excitement more and more giving that slice of happiness we’re looking for.

Shawn Achor, a Harvard graduate, NY Times bestselling author and a leading expert on happiness described this process as the “anticipatory phase” which boosts a person’s happiness. He also emphasised the need to take advantage of their annual leave from work and not to be worried to take it off.

The expert added: “In a world where every dollar and hour count, travellers are looking for a higher return than ever on their investment of time and money. Why take time off and pay money to be more stressed and less happy?

“Travel planned well and instantly booked with ease can dramatically improve your happiness, no matter what type of stay and trip you seek.”
