Italy and food goes hand in hand. The country is renowned for its fine cuisine matching the beauty of its rolling countryside.
You won’t find better pizza and pasta anywhere else in the world but there is a restaurant that is taking fine Italian cuisine to the next level. Osteria Francescana in Modena, is renowned for putting an eccentric twist on Italian classic. Think ravioli with foie gras, spaghetti with green tomato jelly and its signature ‘Oops! I dropped the lemon tart’ desserts which is dropped onto the plate before being served.
Osteria Francescana’s reputation has jumped up a notch as it has been crowned top of the World’s 50 Best Restaurant list at an awards ceremony in New York. It is major coup for chef patron Massimo Bottura who’s eatery has been in the top 10 for several years but this year it has finally taken the top prize.
The three Michelin-starred restaurant knocked 2015 winner El Celler de Can Roca based in Girona, Spain, off the top spot following a vote by some the food industry’s experts. Chef, restaurateurs, food writers and culinary aficionados deemed the Osteria Francescana’s innovation and service to be the best anywhere else in the world.
Mr Bottura was overwhelmed with the result telling Reuters after the award ceremony in New York that “we [Osteria Francescana staff] did something epic”. Both first and second place boast three Michelin stars, the highest award available, but it was Osteria Francescana that managed to scoop the top prize.
The list organisers praised Mr Bottura for how he had been able to bring his restaurant to the fore. They explained: “The chef’s ambitious creations perfectly balance the demands of honouring heritage while embracing modernity.”
A few other European restaurants made it into the top 10. Noma in Copenhagen, Mugaritz and Asador Etxebarri in San Sebastian and Axpe respectively in Spain and Mirazur in Menton, France all made the list. The UK had three representatives in the top 50 with the London trio of The Ledbury, The Clove Club and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal named by the panel.
