If you are planning on heading to Spain or Portugal for your summer holiday then book early.
This is the advice from The Travel Association (ABTA) which has revealed a huge surge in bookings for Iberia. The organisation revealed that overseas bookings were up by 6% with Spain and Portugal seeing the biggest rises of 27% and 32% respectively, compared to the same period last year.
While the region has been a long time favourite for British and European holidaymakers, there has been a considerable shift in consumer preferences. The rise in the Western Mediterranean’s popularity has been partly down to the terrorist attacks in both Tunisia and Egypt and changes to Foreign Office travel advice, ultimately dissuading holidaymakers from visiting the region.
Another factor in Spain and Portugal’s rise has been their response to local economic problems by lowering prices in bars and restaurants. The pound is also holding a considerably high level against the euro meaning people are seeing more bang for their buck when they go on holiday.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive said: “The significant increase in summer holiday bookings to Western Mediterranean destinations is also being mirrored in other Northern European markets so it makes it more important than ever that customers book early to obtain the best value and ensure they get the holiday of their choice.”
As always, thousands of Brits will be heading to the popular Spanish and Portuguese resorts. So if you want to hit the beaches of Alicante, Benidorm or the Balearics, or maybe play a few rounds on the pristine Algarve golf courses, make sure to seek out a booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
