Crete has been ranked among some of the world’s best destination by TripAdvisor.
The Greek island was named the fourth best destination on the planet in the 2019 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards. It managed to beat cities such as Barcelona, Istanbul and Dubai while only London, Paris and Rome were deemed to be a better choice for a holiday. Marrakech, Bali and Phuket also featured in the top ten.
For anyone that is lucky enough to have visited Crete, the accolade will come as no surprise. The region’s biggest island provides that perfect blend of dramatic natural beauty, atmospheric towns and cities, historical landmarks and delicious food. It is home to the magnetising Elafonissi Beach, where you can paddle in turquoise waters and step onto pink sand, where else in the world could you do that?
Crete features heavily in Greek mythology and was said to be the stalked by the famous Minotaur. The fearsome half-man, half-bull creature terrorised the island under the command of Daedalus and Icarus before it was slain by the hero Thesus. It is just one of the fascinating tales that surround Crete and its landscape.
Having a history dating back 4,000 years, it is no wonder that Crete is often credited with being the birthplace of modern civilisation. Visit the Palace of Knossos and see how the Minoans came to shape this island and be the first people to partake in fashion, throw parties and introduce women’s rights.
However, Crete is now a modern favourite with the towns of Agios Nikalos, Elounda and Heraklion having a wealth of restaurants serving traditional Greek cuisine and many elegant hotels. And if there is one thing that the Greek islands do well is a sunset, enough to claim TripAdvisor’s top accolade by itself.
The organisers said: “Crete is a Mediterranean jewel. It’s rich with archaeological and mythological history that’s reflected in its ancient ruins and cultural attractions.”
The Greek islands are no strangers to TripAdvisor’s awards as Balos and Elafonissi were named among the top 25 beaches in the world for 2019. Both Klefitko in Melos and Simos Beach in Elafonissi also placed in the top 25 European beaches, according to the US travel website.
