“Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight”. Seven simple words that put many passengers at ease when they’re about to jet off on holiday.
However, picture the scene. You’re travelling to somewhere say like Cyprus or Turkey, it’s a fairly long flight about four or five hours. You’re just getting in your seat maybe to read a book, listen to music, watch a film on your iPad or just get some shuteye; and then you feel a hard kick in the back of your chair.
What was that? You ignore it and continue doing whatever you’re doing. Then it happens again, and again, and again. Your blood begins to boil and you attempt to politely ask the person responsible to stop; but it persists. You’re getting angrier and angrier and you’ve only just passed over the English Channel.
Does this sound familiar? Well, if it does you’re certainly not alone when it comes to becoming irritated on a flight.
New research from Expedia reveals that the “Rear Seat Kicker” is ranked as top bugbear among regular fliers. As part of its Airplane Etiquette Study, the holiday company asked over 1,000 people who the worst people to be on a flight with. A massive 64% named someone kicking the back of their seat as the biggest “onboard etiquette violators”.
The “Rear Seat Kicker” edged out the “Inattentive Parents” which annoyed 59% of the respondents to the survey while 55% ranked “Aromatic” passengers with either poor hygiene or far too much cologne or perfume as their biggest bugbear.
Others such as the “Audio Insensitive”, who blares music out of their headphones far too loud and “The Boozer”, who takes advantage of the onboard refreshments, also ranked highly in the annoyance stakes. Everything from pushing the seat back, jumping the queue to get on the flight, talking too loud, to hogging the armrest and constantly going to the toilet all featured on the list.
