9 reasons why we love the Canary Islands

For decades, Brits have been making the Canary Islands their go-to holiday destination. Beloved by everyone from families on a budget to celebrities looking for a lavish getaway, this unassuming collection of islands ticks every box for holidaymakers.

Widely regarded as a package holiday haven, there is much more to the Canary Islands than meets the eye. The dramatic, tranquil natural landscape is contrasted with the vibrant cities and coastal resorts, which mean you experience something a little different with every visit.

If you’ve never been to the Canary Islands, here is why you should.

The volcanoes

There are not many places on earth where you can watch your dinner being made on a volcano but in the Canary Islands this is just an everyday occurrence. The islands are characterised by their brooding, dormant volcanoes and Lanzarote takes full advantage of these natural phenomenons.

Stop by El Diablo Restaurant in the heart of Timanfaya National Park and enjoy a unique volcano barbecue experience. If you’re not impressed by that then hop over to Tenerife and see El Teide – the highest point in Spain.

The amazing natural sights

When you’re not marvelling at volcanoes you can take a moment to appreciate the majesty of the Canary Islands’ natural sights. Both Timanfaya and El Teide National Park are a haven for hikers with a beautiful mix of a lunar landscape and springs of tenacious plantlife.

It’s a sheer contrast to the vivid white sand beaches of Corralejo Natural Park in Fuerteventura and the greenery of Garajonay National Park in under-explored island of La Gomera. This is a place where you can be at one with nature.

Some of the best beaches in the world

Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? The Canary Islands has some truly stunning beaches, none more so than Corralejo Grandes Playas in Fuerteventura – a tranquil paradise and the perfect place to catch a wave.

There is such a diverse range of beaches from the quirky black sand Playa Jardin – designed by Tenerife artist Cesar Manrique – to the city beach of Playa Las Canteras in Las Palmas. There is a beach to suit every mood.

It is an underrated city break destination

The Canaries may not be the first place that spring to mind when it comes to city breaks but the region has a host of vibrant metropolises. Gran Canaria’s capital of Las Palmas is a wealth of culture, dating back to the 1400s, and features the historic district of Vegueta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts the unmissable carnival every spring where the city gets the full Rio de Janeiro treatment which colourful parades, live music and the curious “Burial of the Sardine” ceremony. Best of all, each city has a beautiful beach on its doorstep.

It has one of the world’s best water parks

A water park is the staple of any family holiday and Tenerife is home to the world’s best, according to TripAdvisor. Siam Park is a Thai-inspired water kingdom which provides endless fun for kids and grown-ups alike.

You can spend sunkissed days taking on exhilarating slides such as the imposing Tower of Power, the thrilling Mekong Rapids, adrenaline-fuelled Vulcano (complete with alaser show) or float along the relaxing Mai Thai River. This is a must-visit attraction.

It has an abundance of hidden gems

The Canary Islands isn’t just the “big four”, there are a number of ‘secret’ islands that are perfect for exploring. Experience the tranquility of El Hierro, a scenic setting of pine forests and tiny villages which provides a taste of traditional Canarian life.

Go for a dip in the crystal clear waters of La Graciosa, a tiny island home to just 600 people, or follow in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus who lived on La Gomera in the 15th century.
