7 romantic destinations to spend Valentine’s Day

Nothing says romance like Valentine’s Day. Come February 14th, couples around the world will be showing off their affection for one another with flowers, chocolates, cuddly toys and cards. However, if you want this year to be extra special why not book a break in one of Europe’s most romantic cities?

Whether you want to bask in a little of February sunshine or just want a change of scenery to spend with your special someone, Europe has it all. Here are our picks of where to spend your Valentine’s Day this year.

If you want guaranteed sunshine then there are not many better places than Cyprus. If you’re looking for romance on the island – then Paphos is the place to go! After all it is home to the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation that is Aphrodite.

Take a romantic stroll along the beaches of Coral Bay and watch the sun disappear over the horizon or enjoy delicious cuisine looking out on to the beautiful harbour. Sun, sea and sand, what better way to spend Valentine’s Day?

Strolling through the winding streets of Bruges is like getting lost in a medieval fairytale. This perfectly maintained gothic city is home to quaint shops, hideaway bars and all the chocolate you can eat (and you will be hard pushed to find any better than here).

Climb the stairs of the huge Belfry to sample beautiful panoramic views of this incredible city and take a romantic boat ride to the aptly named Lake of Love. After that, stop by the excellent De Garre to drink beer and eat cheese by candlelight, before retiring to one of the many boutique hotels.

Ask people what the most romantic thing they can think of is and a gondola ride through the Venetian waterways will be high up on the list. Birthplace of famous lover and adventurer, Casanova, it is safe to say that Venice simply exudes romance.

The entire city looks like a 17th century painting and St Mark’s Square is the place to be if you want to relax and watch the world go by. And as the sun sets on Venice, have your own private gondola ride for the ultimate Valentine’s Day experience.

Côte d’Azur

Feeling a little adventurous? Then how about a road trip along the French Riviera? This picture-perfect part of Europe is as romantic as it is lavish. Mix with the stars in the beautiful Saint-Tropez or feel all James Bond in Monaco, the Côte d’Azur is ideal for an indulgent Valentine’s break.

Head down to the Monte Carlo harbour and sip champagne as some of the world’s most luxurious yachts roll into port. Hop into the car and drive the coastal road and discover the majesty of Nice, there are so many idyllic stop-off points to make this a holiday to remember.

Have your own private Valentine’s Day in the picturesque countryside of Tuscany. While this has become a real favourite with Brits in recent years, head up to the hills among the lush meadows and escape from everyday life.

While you’re here, it would be rude not to sample the delicious wine produced from the hundreds of vineyards dotted around this landscape. If you want to immerse yourself in culture then the medieval city of Florence is only a short drive away. You could also visit Pisa to see its famous leaning tower; but if you want to simply relax with the one you love then the Tuscan countryside is the place to be.

The northern Portuguese city of Porto is enjoying a renaissance and becoming the place to go in Europe. Sat on the banks of the River Douro it blends the old with the modern and its centre was even named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Situated well within the port wine producing region of Portugal, you can sample this delicious delicacy on organised tours. At night, head to the Ribeira district and watch the sun set over the busy dock while you enjoy a spot of tapas, complimented with fortified wine of course.

No Valentine’s Day getaway list would be complete without the most romantic Europe destination of them all – Paris. The City of Light oozes love from every pore and there is no getting away from how magnificent the French capital is both day and night.

Enjoy cultural adventures at the Louvre and Notre Dame, climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower to see the entire city in all its glory or simply watch the world go by in one of the many quaint bars or cafes Paris has to offer. A hop across to our French neighbour for Valentine’s Day is what many people regard as the ultimate romantic experience, so why not try it out for yourself?
