The conversation usually rears its head around March time. It’s that time of year where we see the first shoots of summer, there is an inexplicably warm day and it gets all your friends in the mood for one thing – a holiday.
They want a week in the sun to truly let their hair down so a month goes by and you’re added to a WhatsApp group with 15 of your nearest and dearest. The debate goes back and forth about where to go, where has the best clubs, where you can get cheap cocktails, where has the best weather and then, ultimately, about 7 of your friends drop out.
That’s okay, you’ve got a group together and picked dates that you can all make. The time off work has been booked and now where are you going to go? If you still haven’t decided – we’ve picked out some destinations that are throwing one hell of a party this summer.
Clubbing holiday, you say? We’ve one word for you – Ibiza. It’s the granddaddy of them all, everybody has been there at least once in their life and they all seem to have a legendary story about it. It has had revellers flocking there for generations to experience the iconic clubs in all their finery.
Maybe summer 2017 is the time to bust your Ibiza cherry and embrace this Balearic Island? At every turn you see those famous names – Space, Privilege, Pacha, Amnesia – they’re all here as are the world’s best DJs from Paul van Dyk to Fatboy Slim to Pete Tong. Ibiza can be an once-in-a-lifetime experience so make yours this year.
The Bonny to Ibiza’s Clyde is Majorca’s own party capital – Magaluf. While the club scene here may not carry the same gravitas as San Antonio and Ibiza Town, it can certainly hold its own when it comes to dishing out big beats and packing dancefloors.
Magaluf’s premier destination is undoubtedly BCM Planet Dance. The biggest club in the town is also the best with foam parties, water parties and the curiously named ‘washing machine party’ soundtracked by some of the world’s best DJs. Not fancy spending your night with 7,000 other revellers? Then hit other hotspots such as Boomerang, Tokio Joe’s (a must if you love you some RnB) or go full 1970s disco at Carwash.

Let’s pause the debauchery for a moment and find a party island with a little more refinement. Somewhere, say, Gerard Butler, Mariah Carey and Leonardo DiCaprio (obviously not all at the same time, although they might be friends, I’m not sure) would choose for their summer break. Welcome to Mykonos.
While this Greek island may look the height of sophistication with beachside tavernas and quaint fishing ports – it has a wild side. As the sun goes down, the darkness is filled with neon at the Skandinavian Disco opens its door with top DJs taking to the decks. Cavo Paradiso hosts an unforgettable beach party and Paradise Bar just keeps going on to the early hours.
Party here and you never know who you could bump into.
Ayia Napa, Cyprus
Okay, back to the debauchery and to Cyprus’ party capital – Ayia Napa. When it comes to nightlife in Europe, this corner of the Mediterranean surely needs to be in the conversation with 12 well established clubs. This ‘dirty dozen’, if you will, features everything from the latest EDM, chart-topping summer hits to chilled out RnB filling the air.
There’s a party for every night of the week from UV paint to pool parties in legendary venues such as Castle Club and Club Ice. These are the biggest clubs in Cyprus and regularly voted among the best in the world. If they don’t float your boat then opt for the sophisticated Soho Club or the laid back vibes of River Reggae. It doesn’t have to all be debauchery.
Do you want to party with the cast of a reality TV show or feel like you’re on a reality TV show? Then Marbella it is. This jewel of the Costa del Sol is renowned for its glamorous nightlife with everything you could ever need – pool parties, giant bottles of champagne and probably someone who was voted off Love Island in the early rounds.
Both Marbella and neighbouring Puerto Banus are filled with swanky nightclubs such as the achingly chic Tibu Banus. Sip cocktails on the roof terrace of Pangea and then hit the dancefloor of Aqwa Mist to the early hours.
If you do choose Marbella remember one thing – no carbs before Marbs.
St Paul’s Bay, Malta

The final stop on this cavalcade of summer merriment is a slightly leftfield option but one that won’t leave you disappointed – St Paul’s Bay. When it comes to clubbing holidays, Malta is probably not the first destination that springs to mind but this tiny island can certainly hold its own.
St Paul’s Bay has a steadily growing reputation as a party destination thanks in no small part to the annual Lost & Found Festival. This weekend of dance music is hosted by legendary DJ Annie Mac and showcases the very best artists in the genre. And even when that is not on there are a host of clubs to satisfy your wild side.
