One of the most talked about weddings is almost upon us. The final preparations are being made at Windsor Castle and Frogmore House as the nation readies itself to celebrate the joining of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in matrimony.
As the big day approaches there will be the usual worries going through the minds of the bride and groom. Will the caterers arrive on time? Will the weather hold off? However, there is one question that is intriguing the country – where will the newlyweds be spending their honeymoon? While Harry and Meghan are breaking from tradition slightly and not jetting off straight after the wedding the destination has still to be decided.
Luckily, we’ve got some suggestions for the newest royal couple (and for you, as well) where they can enjoy a truly memorable holiday.
Playa del Carmen, Mexico
If the royal newlyweds are looking for a slice of paradise then Playa del Carmen should be at the top of their list. Mexico’s Quintana Roo state offers days of cloudless blue skies, soft white sand beaches and the azure waters that many hearts yearn for.
Playa del Carmen offers the relaxing tonic to the boisterous nature of nearby Cancun and is one of Mexico’s premier diving sites. Jump in to discover the colourful reef and say hello to the marine life of rays, sea turtles and much more. Travel along the Mayan Riviera through jungles and discover the remains of this ancient civilisation at the world famous Chichen Itza.
You simply cannot visit Playa del Carmen without sampling the delicious local street food and wash it down with a shot of tequila – naturally.
We like to think that there are moments when the royals are just like us – curled up on the sofa watching a box set together. Well, this is very much the case for Harry and Meghan who were revealed to be huge fans of Game of Thrones so where better to enjoy their honeymoon than the set of the popular HBO series?
The picturesque city of Dubrovnik is the ultimate Game of Thrones geek location forming the backdrop of King’s Landing since the beginning of the series. Known as ‘The Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik is a delightful maze of cobbled streets, churches, palaces, fountains and Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as far as the eye can see.
Characterised by the terracotta-roofed houses and its inviting marina lit up in the moonlight – this is a city break destination that can create a magical honeymoon.
Standing on the unblemished beaches of Formentera, you will notice something. Gaze across the miles of ocean contrasting against the white sands – punctuated only by the greenery of a handful shrubs – and it will strike you immediately – the tranquillity.
This is the best kept secret in the Balearic Islands. Away from the hubbub of its older sister Ibiza, Formentera is the ultimate peaceful retreat. Regarded as the ‘last paradise’ due to its ban on beachside buildings, you can relax on a unique shoreline with only the crash of the waves to pierce through the ambience.
Peruse the hippy markets of El Pilar de la Mola before watching the sunset from one of the harbour-side restaurants. This is a destination you will fall in love with.
Harry’s army days may be over but hiking through the beautiful Sicilian countryside can help to burn off some of the delicious food this Italian island has to offer. Sicily is home to the awe-inspiring Riserva natural dello Zingaro (the Zingaro Nature Reserve, to you and me) a calm cove connecting the towns of Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo.
After spending a day getting in touch with nature, head back to civilisation and to the picture postcard town of Taormina. One of Sicily’s most desirable destinations, you can visit the well-preserved Greek amphitheatre, treat your new beau to a gift from the designer shops and stop off for a gelato in the Medieval quarter.
Need a little more adventure? Then book daytrip climbing up Mount Etna.
Rooftop bars that never sleep, luxury yachts lined up in the marina and private beaches – Marbella is a honeymoon destinations designed for royalty. This diamond of the Costa del Sol is where you rub shoulders with the stars in some of the most exclusive clubs in Europe.
However, it is not all about glitz and glamour, there is a charming old town – Casco Antiguo – that offers the perfect place for some downtime. Enjoy tapas and sangria in the palm tree-laden square before retiring to your beachside hotel and watch the sun go down from your balcony. Alternatively, you can dance the night away in Puerto Banus.
Should Harry and Meghan need a little honeymoon destination advice they could give Prince William and Kate a call. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose the delightful surroundings of the Algarve for their honeymoon.
While the region is usually associated with family-friendly holidays, the quaint town of Vilamoura played host to this royal honeymoon. Book into one of the many villas hidden away in the rolling hills and spend the evening by the glamorous marina sipping cocktails in elegant bars and tasting local cuisine.
And, should, Harry and Meghan fancy a round of golf, Vilamoura has some of the best courses in Europe….or the beach is pretty good as well.
