5 reasons why you need to visit Tenerife in 2020

For many of us Tenerife needs no introduction. The largest Canary Island is our home away from home and no summer is complete without a week or two soaking up the sun on its incredible beaches.

While it may have the reputation of a package holiday destination, there is so much diversity to the island that it will continue to surprise you with every visit. Tenerife holidays 2020 are already the talk of holidaymakers and if you need any more persuading, here is why you should be setting your sights on the Canaries next year.

Where else in the world can you see a volcano every day?

The undeniable focal point of Tenerife is the imposing El Teide. Standing at over 3,700 metres tall, the dormant volcano is the highest point in both Spain and the Atlantic islands. It provides a timely reminder of how the region was formed when it blew its top over 170,000 years ago.

It forms part of the stunning El Teide National Park and, according to Canary Island aboriginal folklore, was where Achaman, the supreme god of mercy, saved Magec from its fiery depths. Today, you can enjoy panoramic views of Tenerife by taking a cable car up to Teide.

The beaches are pretty special

There’s a reason why so many of us visit Tenerife every year – the beaches. And like everything here, there is something for everyone. See the quirky Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz, a colourful ‘garden beach’ of black sand and vibrant palm trees created by Canarian artist Cesar Manrique.

Experience the unique tranquility of La Tejita, a wonderfully secluded cove with the dramatic backdrop of La Montana Roja – the Red Mountain. Then there are the popular resort white sand beaches of Playa las Vistas and Playa la Troya with their calm waters and bustling promenades.

It brings a taste of Rio to the Canary Islands

Every February Tenerife goes into party mode – and this is somewhere that knows how to throw a party. The spirit of carnival takes over the capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in an explosion of colour, dancing and music.

You can toast the crowning of the Carnival Queen, watch the spectacular parades and take part in the curious Burial of the Sardine – a ceremony where an enormous papier-mâché fish is paraded through the streets and then laid to rest. It’s the closest you’ll get to Rio de Janeiro without going to Brazil.

Its home to the world’s best water park

Are you even on a family holiday if you don’t visit a waterpark? It would be an absolute crime if you came to Tenerife and didn’t experience the thrill of Siam Park. Voted the world’s best by TripAdvisor you can up the adrenaline on its iconic slides at this Thai-inspired attraction

Do you dare take on the fearsome Tower of Power with its 28-metre drop into shark-infested waters (well, actually through a shark aquarium)? Maybe you’re more of a lazy river type of person or like the Indiana Jones-style adventure of the Mekong Rapids. Whichever you are, you have to visit Siam Park.
