5 destinations you have to visit in October half term

Did you feel that? There’s a little chill on the breeze now, isn’t there? I’m not quite sure we’re ready for putting on the big coat and turning up our heating. Those long, hot summer days seem a lifetime ago now.

As autumn looms large and the leaves start to turn brown, there is no better pick-me-up than a holiday. How wonderful that the October half term is just around the corner. The kids have settled back into the new school year and deserve a little treat for working hard – so why not surprise them with a week in the sun?

Do you need a little more convincing? Okay, check out our picks of where you can enjoy a memorable October half term holiday (we’ve even thrown in some hotel recommendations for good measure).

Like many of the cities on Turkey’s alluring Turquoise Coast, Alanya began its life as a humble fishing village. In the years since it has blossomed into one of the region’s tourist hotspots. No matter the time of year, you will find the dual beaches of Eastern and Cleopatra busy with holidaymakers and locals sunbathing and snorkelling.

The city is one of contrast with Medieval buildings sitting next to cosmopolitan bars and restaurants. Alanya’s harbour is the place to sample delicious local cuisine and spend a couple of hours people watching. Close to Alanya is the ancient city of Side where you can see the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre and the 2nd century temples of Apollo and Athena.

Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar is the perfect destination for all of you beach lovers. Life in this corner of Spain revolves around the white sands. The twin beaches stretch on for over two kilometres and are constantly abuzz with families building sandcastles, scuba divers meeting the marine life and sunbathers soaking up the rays.

Aside from the trendy bars and restaurants, there are reminders of Lloret de Mar’s origins with the town featuring many Gothic-style buildings and the ruins of an 11th century castle. If you’re looking for a little more adventure then Barcelona is only an hour’s bus ride away.

The Greek islands are as beautiful as the mythological tales make them out to be. Blessed with luscious rolling countryside, snow capped mountains and charming port towns they are understandably popular holiday destinations.

One of these former sleepy fishing villages transformed into lively resorts is Sidari on the island of Corfu. It has been welcoming holidaymakers from all over the world for decades with it’s relaxing beaches, vibrant nightlife and wealth of restaurants serving traditional, mouth-watering Greek cuisine. There is a reason why gods and goddesses were happy to call these islands home.

Menorca is the Balearic Islands with the volume turned right down. If Majorca and Ibiza are the packed night club with thumping dance music, Menorca is the refined jazz club with soothing, dulcet sounds. Life goes at a much slower pace here making it the perfect place to chill out during October half term.

The beaches are quiet; the countryside is tranquil while the towns and cities have a much more laidback atmosphere. Visit the capital of Mahon and take the tour of the harbour or head to the coast and the family-friendly resorts of Cala’n Bosch and Son Bou. If relaxation is the name of the game, then Menorca is where you need to be.
